Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167 m.) Dhaulagiri (8167m) – the name is derived from the Sanskrit dhavala giri meaning ‘white mountain’ - was first climbed by the Swiss in 1960 after four expeditions had failed to reach the summit. The Swiss climb followed a circuitous route around the mountain from Tukuche, going over the Dhampus and French passes and then approaching the summit from the North-East Col. The expedition was unusual in using a Swiss Pilatus Porter aircraft, called ‘Yeti’ which landed on the col, at 5977m, to bring in equipment and climbers. Near the end of the expedition the plane crashed near the Dhampus Pass, the pilots, one of whom was the famous Emil Wick, having to walk down the mountain to reach Tukuche. The peak was climbed by the Japanese in 1970, the American in 1973 and the Italians in 1976, and has now many more ascents.

The valley is the site of four ancient capitals with their attendant palaces, temples and squares, and the modern city's chaotic and fascinating streets, markets, shops and restaurants with intermingled Buddhist and Hindu temples can keep you occupied for days. One night there will be a welcome dinner.
